CLAIRE EDWARDES

ANTIPODUO
BIOGRAPHY Claire Edwardes (percussion) and Sarah Oates (violin) thought it appropriate to refer to their southern hemisphere heritage in the name of their duo – Antipodes referring to the other side of the world (which is very much the case from Europe to both Australia and South Africa). The duo made their debut to a packed audience in the Vredenburg (Utrecht) Lunch Concert series in May 2003. In this program they presented new compositions by Australian composers Ross Edwards and Maria Grenfell as well as well-known repertoire pieces for the combination by Anders Koppel and Astor Piazzolla. In 2004 and 2005 they presented concerts in venues such as the Noorderkerk, Amsterdam and the Muziekcentrum, Enschede. They have commissioned works by the Australian composer Andrew Ford as well as numerous Dutch based composers. In 2007 they will record a CD with ABC Classics featuring previously un-recorded works by Ross Edwards, Andrew Ford and Maria Grenfell. Claire Edwardes (b. 1975) studied percussion at the Sydney (1997 Student of the Year), Rotterdam & Amsterdam Conservatories graduating with a BMus Hon 1 and MMus with Distinction. She was awarded first prize in the 1999 Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year Award, 2000 Vriendenkrans Prize (Concertgebouw, Amsterdam), 2000 Tromp Percussion Competition & 2001 Llangollen International Instrumentalist (Wales). She performs regularly with groups such as Ensemble Modern (DL), Asko Ensemble (NL), Champ D'Action (BE), Slagwerk Groep Den Haag (NL), Synergy Percussion (AUS), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (NL) and presents recitals with percussionist Niels Meliefste (Duo Vertigo), pianist Nicolas Hodges (2002 Huddersfield Festival) and oboist Irma Kort (Pulse 75). As a soloist she has performed with orchestras such as the Brabants Orchestra (NL), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (UK) and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (AUS). She will be performing in 2004 as soloist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and will present solo recitals throughout Australia and Europe. Sarah Oates was born in 1976 in Johannesburg, South Africa and began the violin at the age of 9. In 1992 Sarah was awarded a Levershulme Scholarship to attend the Purcell School of Music, London, where she studied with Yossi Zivoni. Here she received masterclasses with Yehudi Menuhin. She continued her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, where she was the recipient of the Brodsky Memorial Scholarship. In 1998, Sarah was invited to join the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music, New York, where she studied for two years. In 2002 Sarah completed her studies with Alexander Kerr (Concertmaster, Concertgebouw Orchestra) in Amsterdam. Sarah's European debut was in 1998 in Aix en Provence, France, with the Mendeissohn violin concerto, and her American debut was in 1999 at the Sante Fe Music Festival with Pinchas Zukerman.Sarah has had success in various competitions including the SASOL International Music Competition, the SHELL Competition, London, the Bromsgrove International Music Competition and the ‘Vriendenkrans’, Amsterdam.
