         PREMIER PERCUSSIONIST

IN CONCERT FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

The Music Council of Australia and the Freedman Foundation are pleased to announce that in a new departure for the Fellowship program, the winner of this year’s Freedman Fellowship in Classical Music, Claire Edwardes, will give a solo percussion concert to celebrate her win.

The concert will take place in The Recital Hall of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at 6pm on Sunday 14 August 2005.  Tickets are $20 ($15 concession) and will be available for sale at the door prior to the performance.

Claire Edwardes has recently returned to Sydney after six years travelling and studying throughout Europe based in The Netherlands. She was born in 1975 and studied percussion at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she graduated in 1998 with first class honours. She went on to undertake postgraduate studies at the Rotterdam and Amsterdam Conservatories where she graduated in 2003 as a Master of Music with distinction. Claire has had great success in many competitions throughout the world being named Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year in 1999, and first prize winner in the 2000 Tromp Percussion Competition (The Netherlands). She recently recorded “The Axe Manual” with Nicolas Hodges on the Metronome label, which received rave reviews including 5 stars in the BBC Music Magazine. She has close working relationships with many composers including Harrison Birtwistle and Ross Edwards. Future commissions include works by Dominik Karski, Elena Kats-Chernin and Michael Smetanin.

Her solo recital will feature the world premiere of a work by Andrew Ford, and an exciting and accessible program featuring new and classic percussion works by Ross Edwards, Andrew Schultz, Iannis Xenakis, Franco Donatoni, Frederic Rzewski, and Jacob Druckman. Her performances have been described as “engaging to watch”, “electric from start to finish”, “riveting”, having “infectious brio” and “freshness”, “strength and energy” along with “pinpoint accuracy” and “sensitivity” by press throughout the world. She has been described as responding to musical challenges with “faultless self-possession and technical brilliance”.

Claire Edwardes will return to Europe after this concert to fulfil engagements as a solo performer at the respected Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music, November Music with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, the Birtwistle Festival in Groningen with Nicolas Hodges, and performances with the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with the Zephyr quartet.
