About
Clairaudience is clear hearing, or the ability to perceive sound from outside sources, often in the spirit world. Psychics who are clairaudient hear voices, sounds or music that are not audible to the normal ear.
On Clairaudient, all the tracks feature an external element to the solo acoustic instrument whether it be an electronic sound source, another instrument or the electric motor of the vibraphone. In the case of the Steve Reich arrangement for vibraphone and xylophone of the iconic flute work Vermont Counterpoint, the accompanying tracks are essentially a layering of many parts (all recorded by Claire) to create a rich web of sound. All of the works were written for Claire (except the opening track Nostalgic which acts as a sonic sorbet of sorts to gradually introduce the listener to the unusual sound world of percussion) and recorded in close collaboration with the composers.
“Dazzling tenth album from a great Australian percussionist. This thoughtfully conceived collection is expertly performed and brilliantly realised with a subtlety that will repay repeated listenings.”
★★★★½ — Lisa MacKinney, Limelight
“... an immersive hour which demands (and rewards) active listening ... takes you from Vincent Ho's delicate 'Nostalgia' through to Steve Reich's dizzying 'Vermont Counterpoint', via the music poetry of Melody Eötvös, the dry, pace 'Work' from Marcus Whale/Tom Smith and Damien Ricketson's intro-extra-spective 'Time Alone'. It's quite a trip.” ★★★★ — Harriet Cunningham, Sydney Morning Herald
“Clariaudient is a fascinating collection of recent works for solo percussion and fixed-media electronic music, superbly interpreted by Claire Edwardes.” — Michael Hannan, Loud Mouth
